ingenie, the young driver car insurance specialist, is today launching a learner driver insurance product. ingenie Learner covers learner drivers for practicing, driving lessons and taking their test in another person’s car, whilst ensuring the owner’s No Claims Discount is protected in the event of a claim (1).
The product is available for learners aged 17-29 and offers benefits such as flexibility on the length of cover (one to six months), fully comprehensive coverage, and a low fixed £250 excess. This type of cover is an alternative to being added to the car owner’s policy as a ‘temporary additional driver’ or ‘named driver’, which can be more expensive and could affect the owner’s No Claims Discount in the event of a claim.
Unlike ingenie’s Young Driver insurance, this is not a black box product but Learner customers can easily switch to the Young Driver telematics cover after they’ve passed their test (2).
ingenie is also launching its new Learner app, available to all drivers whether or not they have a policy. The app assists driving practice by allowing users to track routes and hours driven during lessons and practice. Learners can also celebrate with trophies for milestones such as driving during rush hour or passing the theory test, throughout their journey to passing (3).

ingenie is a young driver insurance brand that rewards good driving with discounts. A black box fitted in the customer’s car sends their driving data to ingenie, who feeds it back to the driver via an app and online portal. The feedback is designed to help ingenie drivers to monitor their driving skills and help them earn the maximum discount – up to 21% over the year. ingenie Learner is the brand’s first insurance product that is not telematics-based. However young people needing full insurance cover to learn in their own car can buy an ingenie black box Young Driver policy. ingenie has won numerous tech, insurance and road safety awards for its approach, including the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
ingenie fits a black box in the driver’s car, then uses a suite of 200+ proprietary algorithms to build up a picture of their individual driving style. The driver gets a score out of 100 through the ingenie app, along with regular feedback to help them improve. Poor driving triggers more serious messages to the driver, when ingenie’s Driver Behaviour Unit will get in touch to give them extra help to get them back on track. Good driving is rewarded with quarterly discounts, worth up to 21% over the year. The ingenie approach puts the power in the hands of its young customers – providing them the opportunity to save money when they buy the policy, during the life of the policy and at renewal.
ingenie Business is the machine behind ingenie’s young driver insurance; the data, technology and driver engagement that helps motoring businesses build successful telematics programs, most recently with roadside assistance organisation ANWB.
